The Starters Cup, the Kennel Club’s premier agility competition for new dogs and handlers, came to a climax this weekend (12-13th November 2011) with three finals at Discover Dogs, held at London’s Earls Court. In a series of exciting rounds for Large, Medium and Small dogs, rising stars of the agility world thrilled a packed main ring audience.

Although only relatively new to agility, all the dogs and handlers demonstrated the talents and commitment that had won them their places in this prestigious event. The results of the finals were based on a combined score from a jumping round in the morning and an agility round in the afternoon.

The Starters Cup competition was created to enable the best dogs in Grades 1 and 2 of agility to compete in a high-profile national agility final each year. The qualifying rounds are held at the world’s largest agility show, the Kennel Club International Agility Festival, held every August at Kelmarsh Hall in Northamptonshire.

At the Festival the competitors had to succeed in a jumping round and an agility round, from which the top placed dogs then took part in a semi-final. The top 12 Large dogs from the semi-final, together with the top six Medium and six Small dogs, were invited to compete for the Starters Cup title in the finals at Discover Dogs.

Discover Dogs also featured three new invitational agility events in the main ring on the Sunday – a ‘Small-Mixi’ pairs competition, a Medium ABC (Anything but Collies) and a Large Novice (grades 1-5) ABC – all of which will feature at Discover Dogs next year as competitive finals (Small-Mixi pairs) or semi-finals (Medium and Novice Large ABC) after a series of qualifiers held at agility shows across the country during 2012. The ABC competitors will go on to finals at Crufts 2013.

Notes to Editors
The Kennel Club is the largest organisation in the UK devoted to dog health, welfare and training. Its objective is to ensure that dogs live healthy, happy lives with responsible owners.

It runs the country’s largest registration database for both pedigree and crossbreed dogs and the Petlog database, which is the UK’s largest reunification service for microchipped animals. The Kennel Club Assured Breeder Scheme is the only scheme in the UK that monitors and sets standards for breeders, in order to protect the welfare of puppies and breeding bitches. It also runs the UK’s largest dog training programme, the Good Citizen Dog Training Scheme and licenses shows and clubs across a wide range of activities, which help dog owners to bond and enjoy life with their dogs. The Kennel Club runs the world’s greatest dog show, Crufts, and the Discover Dogs event at Earls Court, London, which is a fun family day out that educates people about how to buy responsibly and care for their dog.

The Kennel Club invests the money that it makes from registrations and its Petlog identification database into its dog training and education programmes, welfare campaigns and the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, which supports dog welfare charities and research into dog diseases. The Kennel Club jointly runs health screening schemes with the British Veterinary Association and, through the Charitable Trust, funds the Kennel Club Genetics Centre at the Animal Health Trust, which is at the forefront of pioneering research into dog health.
The International Agility Festival also stages equivalent competitions for dogs in Grades 3-5 – the Novice Cup – and Grades 6 and 7 – the British Open. The finals for these competitions are held at Crufts in March.
