What's going on at Discover Dogs
I'm too young to go to myself so I have asked some mates from all over the country to be my Roving Reporters for Discover Dogs this year.
Jethro the Bloodhound has signed up first and there’s more joining the team very soon - I'll introduce them all later. All different shapes, sizes, appetites and energy levels. So watch this spot. These guys will be my Roving Reporters and go down to Earls Court and find out the news and views from a dogs point of view for all of us who can‘t get to it this year.
I’m looking forward to watching Mary Ray demonstrating heelwork to music ‘cos I rather fancy learning how to do that and there’s nothing like seeing the experts in action. My cousin, Murphy, wants to take part in Scruffts one year, so I’ll be asking Jethro to find out about that for me so Murph can maybe apply next year. Its not just for those of us with pedigrees.
My mum, Pegs says what is really great about Discover Dogs is that there are dogs there from each breed and you can actually meet and greet the dogs themselves to find out more about them. You know, you can really see how big, small, fluffy, scruffy, neat they actually are, not just like seeing them in the distance in the park or in a book. There’ll be people who know all there is about their special friends and what sort of owners they need to keep them healthy and happy.
But you can’t just think you know us from what we look like. Some of us like to keep busy and others are real couch potatoes, its not just down to size. As well as finding the breed for your friend for life, you also need to find a good breeder who makes sure the pups are healthy and happy. Jethro will be finding out what sort of health checks you need to find out about before you get a pup.
Keeping us happy though also means making sure you can give us the sort of home and companionship we need and we don’t all need the same type of life. Mum always tells us not one of her pups was the same, in each litter there are lots of personalities who will want different types of owners. So the final bit is choosing the right pup in the litter for you. Just like all brothers and sisters - we have our special strengths and the things that we just aren’t interested in.
There are also stands from people who look after dogs that need new homes, like my friend PC Mugford who works as a demonstrator for Company of Animals. He found his new home through the Battersea Dogs Home many years ago. He will be talking to us soon about his life and he will be there demonstrating toys on his stand.
The Guide Dog of the Year, Theo will be talking about what it is like to be a superstar and change someone’s life. We'll also be finding out about how to sponsor a puppy with the Guide dogs and lots more.
Back on the home front I am also hoping to talk to Raq, Eric Robson's dog about lots of good walks and places to go in the Lakes and tell some of the people down at Earls Court about the new website Lake District for Dogs. Uncle Fox has also sent me some more great pics of him and his gang at work at the Lake District Sheepdog experience so I thought I would attach a few more to the blog - its part of my homework to learn more about the job.
At the end of all this hard work I’m hoping someone is going to bring back something for me. Jethro says there are lots of special stands selling perfect Christmas presents for us dogs. So keep in touch and we’ll update you on some of the sights , sounds and smells on the day.
