Jethro the Bloodhound
My name’s Jethro, I am really pleased Scout has asked me to act as part of the team for her Roving Reporters at Discover Dogs, cos there’s no dog better at sniffing out something interesting than a Bloodhound like me. Scout said I needed to tell you a bit about myself - so here goes …
My Mum had always been a Border Collie person. There had been 6 collies in the Cook household before Mum decided she might like a Bloodhound. Mum says she likes 'dogs that do" and she thought Bloodhounds would keep up nicely with the collies. After being checked out by the Association of Bloodhound Breeders, Mum was allowed to have a black and tan male-Bonham.
Four years down the line, Mum decided it was time to bring in another one, and asked David and Helen Powell (Trailfinder) if she could have a puppy from the next litter they bred. The Powells had made a point of introducing themselves at the first Bloodhound show Mum went to and made a fuss of Bonham as they bred his mother. the Powells show great care and concern for the breed and its health and are very careful who they give puppys to.
Mum wanted another boy , didn't matter what colour, to fit in with the setup at home. We have Puck, a very strong natured 12 year old border collie bitch, who is definitely in charge, and she likes boys better than girls.
It is quite normal to have to wait for a Bloodhound puppy, and eventually a phone call came to say I was on my way. I was part of a very special litter-the first litter of bloodhounds born in the UK, conceived by artificial insemination.
My dad is an American Champion-Ridgerunner Xerxes, who was a fully fledged deputy for the Wisconsin Police Force whose evidence is recognised in court -how cool is that? My Dads a Deputy Dawg!!! So true to the American part of my breeding, I was born on 4th July 2007. (good name for a film, that!)
Mum and Dad, travelled down to Devon to meet me at 5 1/2 weeks old, but could not choose. Mum would have had any of the pups. she left the responsibility of choosing the right pup to Helen and Dave. They picked me for Mum, a red boy who never lifted his nose off the ground when out and about, and at 8 1/2 weeks old I came to Whitley Bay to live with the Cook family.
The dogs here, lead very full and active lives. We are always out and about exploring. Mum runs training classes and is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. She tried to get us to like agility. Aunty Joan's Bloodhound ,Pilgrim ,loves it and does it very well-but it's not for Bonham and me. We like tracking best. Bonham introduced Mum to Hunting the Clean Boot. He is very good at it and has won certificates and a trophy so I have a big act to follow (blah blah blah).
I have the first part of my working permit which meant that I could compete in autumn trials. I had a great time. I am very fast and because I am restricted (hunted on a long line), Dad has to keep up with me. I thought Dad might need medical assistance at the end of the line. He was very red, but not a lovely red like me, more beetroot red. Tracking is my favourite thing and the more you practice the better you get, and everyone tells you how clever you are when you find the person who has lost their sock or glove or hat. Apparently I am a much more spirited dog than Bonham (not sure what they mean by that, but they usually laugh when they say it)
There are 4 dogs here, and we all live indoors. Mum says bloodhounds are very messy to live with and is always mopping the area where we eat and drink, and scraping slobber from walls , ceilings, tv screen -whatever.
In the evenings I like nothing better to get on the sofa between Mum and Dad, rest my head on their laps, and I am forgiven for anything I might have ever done wrong. Bloodhound cuddles are the best.
Will be talking again soon - if you go to Discover Dogs this year you will be able to meet me on the Bloodhound stand in the Hound section. You’ll be able to hear me too if I get on a good scent- Its normally my job to tell Mum if I find something interesting - this time I’ll tell you!
